Mandatory Sibling Enrollment Meeting

February 4, 2022 11:30-12:30 Zoom Code:     ID: 889 9233 6810  Password: learn

School Mission: Leonardo da Vinci K-8 School is a community dedicated to the development of the whole child as a literate, curious, and inventive person, responsible for preserving and creating beauty in cultural and natural environments.  LdV fosters this Renaissance child of the Arts and Sciences model through Integrated Thematic Instruction.

Due to the current global health pandemic caused by COVID-19, all our classes and parent meetings are being conducted via distance learning and zoom online conferencing.

School History: Leonardo da Vinci School (LdV) was established in 1989 as a kindergarten through 8th grade school site and today there are now 886 students enrolled.  The student makeup includes one early kindergarten class, four classes at each grade level from kindergarten to third grade, three classes for each grade level from fourth to sixth grade, and 156 middle school students. Students in middle school grades 7 and 8 rotate to six different classes and are taught by teachers who hold single subject credentials and experience teaching high school.  Students are taught through board-adopted texts, thematic instruction (Highly Effective Teaching formerly called Integrated Thematic Instruction), and mastery projects (long term, in-depth projects supported by written report and oral presentation). In addition, LdV incorporates the following into thematic units used at every grade level: 8-10 learning field trips, large end-of-unit projects, research projects, oral presentations, science instruction, social science curriculum that connects to the English Language Arts Program, and math that covers the four common core domains. We are dedicated to educating the whole child through Integrated Thematic Instruction.

Enrollment: At this time, every class in the school is full and we have a waiting list. If you are interested in filling out a wait list for the 2021-2022 school year, please email our office manager, Donna Roots at donna-roots@scusd.edu.

In order to join our community and sign up on the waiting list or sign up for the lottery, parents must attend one of our Zoom presentations and tours, 9:15-11:15AM on Nov. 19, Dec. 3, Dec. 17, Jan. 21, and February 4.

At the end of the presentation, interested families of children in each grade except K and 4th will be offered a Waiting List Form. This will be a google document. For parents of children entering kindergarten or 4th grade for 2022-2023, they will need to fill out a district open enrollment lottery form. The district open enrollment forms will be available February 2022. For LdV current Early Kindergarten students- the students will move into kindergarten. For LdV siblings, they need to complete the Open Enrollment Lottery form for kindergarten or 4th grade. All other grades, even for siblings, have a wait list form. We will discuss the enrollment, lottery and waiting list process at the presentation (zoom presentation).

Zoom etiquette: Type your first and last name on screen, video screens on (off for personal care), and microphone off until speaking. Thank you!

We are an Open Enrollment/Waiting List School.

While it may seem challenging to join the school, we have 886 students and over 400 families. Please join us! Come to our meeting, learn about LdV, and find out how to enroll your child. We hope that if our school philosophy is aligned with your interest areas for your child’s eK-8th grade education- you will start the process to connect with this amazing school community.

Warm Regards,

Devon Davis

Early Kinder Admission Process

  • A child must be age 5 on or before September 1st to enroll in kindergarten
  • Students born on September 2nd through December 2nd are eligible for Early Kinder not kindergarten
  • Students shall not be enrolled into Early Kinder if the child turns 5 after December 2nd.
  • There is no separate priority for November, October, or September born children. Just consider this 3 month span of birth dates as having equal access to the Early Kinder programs
  • If a lottery is necessary because of over enrollment at a given school site; all September, October, November, and December 1st and 2nd born students should have their names placed in same equable lottery at the school site.
  • Eligible LdV siblings receive priority

Kindergarten – 8th Grade Lottery and Admission Process

Enrollment Basics

The California Department of Education reports that students enrolled in K-8 schools demonstrate higher self-esteem and are more likely to have overall academic, emotional and social success in school. At Leonardo da Vinci (LdV) the “internal community of accountability” that develops among teachers, parents, and students promotes a culture of caring and rigor marked by hard work, high aspirations, and an expectation that all will succeed.

Students at LdV benefit from teachers who are 100% credentialed, highly qualified, encouraging and accessible. They enjoy a curriculum that’s varied and challenging. They find opportunities in a multitude of activities including art, music, science, field trips, assemblies, hands-on experiences and athletics.

Experts agree the involvement of parents is the key to the student’s success. Parent involvement is an essential component of our program.  Parents commit to supporting the education of their child by volunteering a minimum of 40 hours per year.

Ldv eK-8 School is an Open Enrollment School. Openings in Kindergarten are filled through the Sacramento City Unified School District Open Enrollment process. The school district sets a date when parents must register students online through the district website (www.scusd.edu).  (There is currently no in-person assistance at this time for enrollment).  Fourth grade openings are also filled by this same process.

Open Enrollment Information for the 2022-2023 School Year

Open Enrollment Application Available: February 2022

Notification Letters Send Out citing your child’s status: April 1, 2022 (approx.)

Registration Dates: April 2022

Should we have openings at other grade levels, they will be filled by on-site waiting lists. LDV on-site waiting lists are for EK and grades 1-3 , and 5-8.  Participation in a visitation day is required to be placed on the waiting list. Waiting list applications are available at our Open Enrollment parent visitations.

Our school curriculum and methods of teaching are unique, in addition to participating in the district Open Enrollment process, Leonardo da Vinci has criteria that needs to be met to be included in the district lottery. The first step is to participate in a school visitation.

Come and learn more about Leonardo da Vinci’s eK-8 program and how it can benefit your student. No reservation is required, but we ask that you arrive on time and expect to spend two hours on campus. At the conclusion of the visitation, there is a question/answer session. Visitations are for adults only. In order to lessen the disruption to our classrooms, we ask that you do not bring children under age 10 (6th grade). Middle school visitations do include the student who will be applying. Incoming students are expected to have excellent attendance, positive behavior, and a strong academic history – a current report card may be requested. Applicants for 7th grade should bring a portfolio with current attendance, grades, behavior, and a teacher recommendation.

For Open Enrollment, once district registration AND the LdV criteria are met, the child can be entered into the lottery. Students whose parent or guardian did not attend an Open Enrollment visitation will be disqualified. Families will be notified by the district when and where the child is placed on the list for Open Enrollment (grades K and 4).

Please note that although siblings have priority in lottery placement, participation in the district Open Enrollment process is required for attending LdV. Sibling priority is given after one year at LdV.

Enrollment at LDV is not complete until registration occurs and a mandatory meeting has been attended. Specific dates and times will be communicated for registration and the mandatory meeting.
