Learning Garden

Overview

The mission of the LdV school garden is twofold: First, it provides a hands-on area where the California State Content Standards and Integrated Thematic Instruction (ITI) are further implemented. The LdV school garden compliments ITI and the state standards, by creating an outdoor classroom for active learning; secondly, the garden will provide a source of fresh, nutritional food to the student population within the school year.

Garden Work Days

Garden Work Days, and other special garden events and/or committee meetings, are posted in the LdV PTC newsletter and sent out via email to PTC members, and the LdV Garden Group. Children are welcome to attend garden work days under your supervision. We do not garden on rainy or exceptionally windy days. You do not need to sign up to attend, but if you show up later than 1 hour after the official starting time the garden may be closed, so please inform the garden chairperson if you plan to be late.

Classroom Garden Volunteer

Do you want to make sure your child’s class gets out into the garden on a regular basis, sign up to be your Classroom’s Garden Volunteer at the first class meeting! You will work with your teacher, and the garden committee coordinator Jeri Clark, to schedule times to work in the garden, and to coordinate planting and/ or other educational activities that can be completed in our outdoor garden classroom.

Garden Recess Volunteer

The goal is to have the garden open as many recess periods as possible, but there must be a trained volunteer supervising at all times. While some of our recess volunteers actively work with the kids during recess times, others simple supervise. Spending time in the LDV garden, during recess, is a wonderfully rewarding experience for all–try it once and you will be hooked!
